Stocking decisions sit at the intersection of land, forage, livestock demand, time, and management judgment. The RanchAssist™ Stocking Rate Calculator brings those variables into one practical planning model so ranchers can estimate what a pasture may support without hiding the assumptions behind the answer.
Use the calculator to estimate supported head count, grazing days, acres required, acres per head, available forage, livestock dry-matter demand, animal units, and AUM equivalents from the values you enter.
The goal is not to replace local observation or professional guidance. The goal is to make a stocking-rate calculation easier to build, inspect, adjust, compare, save, and share.
WHY THIS TOOL EXISTS
A stocking-rate number can look precise while still depending heavily on assumptions.
Usable acreage may differ from total property acreage. Forage production can change by season, weather, pasture condition, and management. Livestock class, live weight, intake percentage, herd size, and grazing duration all affect demand. Utilization, harvest efficiency, residual targets, and drought buffers can materially change the amount of forage a plan treats as available.
That makes a single unexplained “head per acre” number difficult to evaluate.
The Stocking Rate Calculator was designed around a different principle:
Show the supply.
Show the demand.
Show the assumptions.

Then show the planning result.
WHAT THE CALCULATOR HELPS YOU ESTIMATE
The calculator can answer four common planning questions:
1. How many head can I stock?
Estimate the number of animals the modeled forage supply may support for a selected grazing period.
2. How many grazing days do I have?
Estimate how long the modeled forage supply may support a known herd.
3. How many acres do I need?
Estimate the grazing area required for a known herd and target grazing period.
4. How do different assumptions compare?
Build up to three temporary scenarios and compare the effect of different acres, forage production, utilization, herd size, animal weight, duration, and other user-controlled assumptions.

HOW THE CALCULATION WORKS
FORAGE SUPPLY
The user enters:
• Usable grazing acres
• Estimated forage production in pounds of dry matter per acre or tons per acre
• Utilization percentage
• Harvest efficiency percentage
• Residual or reserve percentage
• Drought buffer percentage
A simplified representation is:

These values are user-controlled planning assumptions. RanchAssist does not claim that one utilization, reserve, or drought percentage is correct for every ranch or pasture.
LIVESTOCK DEMAND
The livestock side uses:

• Daily dry-matter intake as a percentage of body weight
• Herd count, when required by the selected question
• Optional animal-unit equivalent override

Preset values are editable examples. Users can adjust average live weight, dry-matter intake percentage, and animal-unit equivalent.
ANIMAL UNITS AND AUM
Head count alone does not always communicate differences in livestock size or class.
The calculator shows animal-unit and AUM equivalents alongside the dry-matter-demand calculations.
The optional animal-unit equivalent can be adjusted when the user’s planning method calls for a different value.
Dry-matter demand remains tied to the live-weight and intake assumptions entered into the calculator.
SCENARIO PLANNING
The calculator supports up to three in-session scenarios.
Default labels:

These labels are organizational tools only. They are not weather forecasts, forage forecasts, or management recommendations.

A `.ra` file can preserve applicable editable state including:
